Ramsey’s Quest to become a “Science Magnet School” - Fall 2010.
What is a magnet school? - A Magnet school is part of the public school system. Usually students are zoned into their schools based on location. Students usually go to the school closest to them. Magnet schools accept students from around the district and from other districts if there is room. They have something special to offer beyond the regular school curriculum which makes attending them an attractive choice to many students.
What are the typical “pros” of becoming a magnet school? - Generally more involved parents - they choose to have their students attend that school. Parents / students “opt in” to go to the school.
- Added internal motivation for kids who go there because their interests are explored.
- Staff attracted and committed to the focus (science).
- Social / ethnic diversity of students.
- Part of public school system.
- Opportunities to receive additional funding. (federal and state grants)
- Often attract “gifted” students.
- All students achieve better academically.
- National STEMS (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) push. Ramsey will be out in front.
- Higher attendance rates.
- Innovative science curriculum opportunities and specific training for staff.
- Natural opportunities for community involvement / outreach.
